Honesty in Advertising

We say what we mean. We do what we say.

What about weight Loss?

OK, what's all this FDA stuff?

We've been asked time and again, "if your product isn't designed to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, why the hqiz are you selling it?"

Good question. The answer is, we have to say that, by law. Only licensed medical practitioners can diagnose and treat illnesses, and only FDA-approved drugs can advertise that they are effective against specific conditions. These laws are in place to protect the health of the consumer, and prevent the sale of nostrums and patent medicines with wild claims about curing everything from cancer to ingrown toenails.

Sadly, enforcement in the area of advertising is lax, witness the absolute deluge of insane claims of weight loss on the internet stemming from the use of açai berry and colon cleanse products. Seldom has such a feeding frenzy of unsubstantiated advertising been seen in the modern world, but whenever there is money to be made, we find people who are willing to throw ethics out the window, despite the danger of a) severe health damage or b) no appreciable benefit.

That said, there are many, many products, as well as raw substances taken from nature, which have been shown over time to have great benefits - by the middle of the 1700's, for example, willow bark extract (rich in salicylates) was well-known for helping to reduce fever, pain and inflammation*, ultimately leading to the synthesis of aspirin.

As a result, that little disclaimer has to appear anywhere we talk about the kinds of benefits that people have experienced using this or that nutritional supplement. But just because the FDA has not approved our discussion does not mean that the products we sell have no value. That's just the landscape we are given to work in.

What about those CBC articles?

Some years ago, a competitor - one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of imported, petroleum-based MSM, orchestrated the publication of some deceptively-crafted articles through a major Canadian news organization (the CBC) aimed at discrediting the purity and origin of DistilPure MSM. The DMSO from which our former batch of product is distilled has been guaranteed by the manufacturer to come from lignin (i.e. wood pulp) rather than petrochemical sources.

Our supplier has indicated that the previous DMSO manufacturer will no longer be manufacturing lignin-based product. A new organic source - the by-product of European grains - has been located, and the DMSO used to produce DistilPure MSM crystal flakes is certified by carbon-testing to be 100% bio-source material.

The straight facts about nutritional supplements.

As mentioned above, many products both natural and manufactured can have health benefits. It's no coincidence that after gorging himself on Farmer McGregor's garden, Peter Rabbit (written in 1902) got a dose of chamomile tea instead of bread and milk and blackberries - chamomile has long been recognized as a stomach-settling herb*.

That said, for many products - MSM included - there is a lack of randomized, double-blind, placebo-based trials that form the basis for FDA approval of most drugs. There is also a wealth of results from independent researchers which take the evidence for effectiveness beyond the realm of the anecdotal. The choice of products we sell at OCH Distributing is neither random nor capricious. It is based on extensive research by trained medical personnel, world-renowned scientists, and personal experience.

In large part, we sell our products to those who already recognize the benefits of MSM, glucosamine and other supplements, and who are looking for the purest, most natural and most effective products they can buy. For those who are looking for relief from particular complaints, we point in the direction of published works which we trust, and provide what information we can stand behind with confidence. In every case, however, there is the chance that the product will not give one person the same benefits that another one derives. This, however, is not uncommon with pharmaceutical products as well, as everyone's body chemistry is different. Ultimately, in the area of nutritional supplements, it's up to the consumer to do his or her own research, and judge for themselves if a product is effective or not.

We have selected products that conform to the CAPPS standard of measurement (completeness, availability, purity, potency and safety); in addition, they are manufactured to pharmaceutical GMPs (good manufacturing practices) or the Canadian equivalent thereof. In short, we've done everything we know how to make sure what you're getting is the best available on the market.

Because we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee, we feel confident that people have nothing to lose and everything to gain from the products we offer, which in any case are safe and as pure as modern manufacturing knows how to create.

How pure is pure?

That depends on how finely you want to split hairs. We can't advertise that our MSM is 100% pure, even though it's as close as technology can make it - every manufacturing process will allow some miniscule percentage of impurities to creep in. Suffice it to say that analysis of DistilPure showed a 99.9% minimum purity standard, and in reality is significantly better.
